If you were shopping on Getzs.com Monday night you may have noticed that our site was not available. I would like to explain to you, our customers how a series of events caused Getzs.com to be off-line between 9:00P to 1:00A EST Monday night.

Our website is hosted by Rackspace, in it’s Dallas/Fort Worth data center. On Monday evening, a truck accident damaged the transformer that powers our data center. Backup power immediately came on as it was supposed to, and everything continued to work as it was supposed to. However the power company rightfully decided to cut power to the area in order to allow safety workers on the scene to rescue the truck driver. The power outage then caused the data center’s backup cooling system to fail. As the heat in the data center rose higher there was risk or hardware failure and permanent data loss. The Rackspace team decided to shut down some of the servers to lower the heat. Unfortunately, our server was one that was shut down, causing the Getzs.com site to go off-line.

The server was powered back up at 12:05A EST and we were able to get the site back online at 12:45A Tuesday morning. With a little bit of testing we confirmed that everything was working correctly and there was no data loss.

Our Rackspace server has never gone off-line since we have started using them as our primary hosting. We have been in contact with Rackspace and they have been completely honest about every detail that happened to cause the outage and have insured us that they will do every thing they can to prevent this sort of thing from happening again. We believe that every action they took was necessary, even though it involved shutting down our server. In effect it allowed EMTs and Firemen to safely rescue the injured driver.

We apologies to you if the outage prevented you from visiting Getzs.com on Monday night or Tuesday morning. We at Getzs pride ourselves in making you shopping experience as convenient as possible and this includes being available 24/7 all year round.

With the new Getzs.com re-design we have added many features to help you shop the way you want. We refreshed the design, making better use of your screen space. We’ve added new ways to shop while keeping the old ways the same. You can still shop by brand by clicking on a brand name at the top of the page or in the “All Brands” drop down menu. We made it easier to shop by category too. On the left side of most of the pages on Getzs.com you will see a “Browse” column. Here you can quickly jump to whichever category you are looking for. Want to see all of the Jackets Getzs.com has to offer? just click on the “Jackets” link under Apparel. This category listing will show all products regardless of brand. Only care to see products from one brand? When you visit a brand page, this side column will change to reflect the brand you are viewing. When it says “Browse in Brand” all those categories will apply just to that Brand. For example, if you browse to the Marmot brand page you will see links on the side such as “Fleece Jackets”, by clicking on this link you can browse all of Marmot’s Fleece Jackets that we carry.

June 20th, 2007 started as most weekdays do around here, cheerful good mornings as team members prepared for the workday. It ended as one of the wildest weather days in the history of Marquette, MI. Thunderstorms had been predicted but no one was prepared for what was about to happen. Around 2:30 p.m. the rains began as a bizarre feeling set in. When the winds picked up and hail started to fall, local folks knew this was something unlike anything Marquette has ever seen. Marble to quarter size hail shot down from the sky as the streets were painted in white. Pedestrians ran for cover as they were blasted with ice pellets from the clouds. Winds ripped through the trees tearing leaves off as if fall had came early. Then, as quickly as it arrived it was gone. Leaving in its wake a community that has some major cleaning up to do.

Thankfully no injuries have been reported. This reminds all of us that Mother Nature is still a force to be reckoned with.
